A skip can be a useful tool during a project to manage your waste and help clear out any unwanted debris or items. Depending on your project, how long you’ll need to hire a skip will vary. For smaller tasks like room clear-outs or disposing of garden debris, you may only need a skip for a few days, but for larger jobs, your hire time may need to be extended.
How long you’ll be able to hire for will be different depending on your supplier’s terms. Here at Budget Skips Direct, our skips can be hired for a standard duration of 1-2 weeks, but many of our skips have longer maximum terms of up to 28 days. For longer durations, you should contact your supplier before hiring to agree on a timeframe and price.
Estimate your duration
Before you book your skip hire, it’s recommended that you have an idea of how long you’ll need your skip for before hiring. Once delivered, it might be difficult to extend your hiring duration if you need it longer.
Get the right skip size
Running out of space for your waste mid-way through a project can be frustrating. Hiring the right skip size before you begin your project will help to prevent having to halt your project until your skip can be taken away.
2 – 4 Yard Skips
Holding 20 – 40 bin bags, these smaller skips are ideal for home projects like room renovations.
6 – 8 Yard Skips
Holding 50 – 80 bin bags, these medium sized skips are suitable for larger renovations and bulkier waste like soil.
10 – 16 Yard Skips
Holding 80 – 180 bin bags, these larger sized skips are best suited for large amounts of waste and multi-room projects. As a reminder, these skips are for light waste only.

Whether your skip will be on your property, such as a driveway or lawn, or required to be on the road will impact how you hire. To hire a skip for on-road use, you’ll need a permit from the council. Your supplier can obtain one for you for an extra fee. Keep in mind, a standard on-road permit may not cover the entire duration of your hire, so it’s important to ensure you’re covered for the whole rental period to avoid a potential fine.
If you want to place the skip off-road on your property, pick a spot that is easy to access, around 10 – 10.5ft minimum width is advised. This way, your supplier can deliver and collect the skip without any issues. Ensure that there are no blockages or locked gates that might prevent access.
If for any reason your supplier cannot delivery or collect your skip, you might be charged with a wasted journey fee. This charge covers the time and fuel costs of the skip supplier. To make sure your supplier can deliver or pick up your skip, follow these 3 tips:
If you have a set date for your skip collection, you can expect it to be picked up on that day. If you asked for an earlier collection, it might take 1 to 5 working days for your skip to be taken away. During busy times, it may take up to 18 working days, but your supplier will let you know.
Many skip suppliers will allow you to keep your skip for longer than your initial rental period upon request, just be sure to give your supplier at least 24 hours’ notice before your collection date. At Budget Skips Direct, customers can hire their skip for extra weeks for an additional cost of £40 plus VAT. If you need the skip for more than an extra month, you will need to pay the full cost of the skip again.
